Narration: Up the St. Lawrence River went the French explorers, Cartier, Champlain and the others, in the dimming hopes of reaching China. Perhaps in mockery they named a group of rapids a thousand miles from the sea ‘Lachine,’ China. In their wake came the first settlers. They established New France along the banks of the St. Lawrence. They started to unroll the map of the new world. The story of how that map was unrolled is the story of the peoples of Canada.
