The introductory animation starts with a view of the Canada flag above the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa. The camera zooms back over the capital city until it centres on the tallest of Statistics Canada's three buildings. The front of the building opens, like the doors of a large book case, to reveal a number of shelves filled with books of different colours. A copy of Canada Year Book, 1916/1917 flies out of the book case and the title 'Canada Year Book Historical Collection' animates into the center of the screen. The camera then zooms into a page of the book, where a picture of a painting turns from black and white to colour and fills the screen. In the painting, several Canadian landmarks, such as the Peace Tower and a lighthouse, morph into photographs as animated statistical charts are superimposed in the foreground. The animation ends when the camera zooms back out to show the painting in its entirety.
